Growing up as a diy, gay, punk rock, skater kid in Florida, indie music was in my soul from as early as I can remember. I lived it, breathed it, went so far as to start my own zine and record label. So when I started to discover hip-hop in the mid 80’s my mind was blown. The parallels were so exciting to me: music with a message created and performed by any means necessary… everything DIY and grassroots.
Today, I see some of these parallels in craft beer too; the art, the experimentation, the creativity, the independence… So when I heard that the great Nappy Roots were opening Atlantucky, their own brewery and taproom in Atlanta, I thought, ‘Of course they are! It only makes sense.’

The Grammy Award-nominated group will perform at the opening and will be onsite to speak and take photos with their fans. Additionally, there will be a month-long celebration in conjunction with Black History Month. “We are proud to be one of the few black-owned breweries in Atlanta, so it’s really meaningful for us to officially open our doors during Black History Month,” Nappy Roots Founding Member Skinny Deville said. “Now, we are ready for our friends and fans to come and share in our passion for craft beer.”
While touring the past several years, Nappy Roots collaborated with dozens of breweries and mass-produced numerous beers across the country. They also began experimenting at their home brewery, Atlantucky, which fermented their passion for microbrewing. The name, “Atlantucky,” celebrates the band’s historical roots of being founded in Kentucky and settling in Atlanta. The brewery is already making noise by taking home Bronze in the Cream Stout category at the U.S. Open Beer Championship in 2020.
If you’re lucky enough to live in the area, be sure to get down to the opening event for a fresh beer. I look forward to paying a visit next time I’m visiting family in Atlanta. It’s super amazing to see the worlds of great indie music and beer come together
